Woman Attacked While Jogging on Athletic Field in Bridgeville

Released Wednesday, September 03, 2008

BridgevilleThe Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted sexual assault of a 27-year-old Bridgeville woman as she was jogging on the athletic fields on Woodbridge Road (property of the Woodbridge School District) near Bridgeville. The assault occurred Sunday, August 31 at approximately 11:00 am.

Troopers responded to the scene after the victim and a person who arrived to work on the fields called 911 to report the incident. Investigators learned the victim was jogging on the property when a black male subject confronted her. The subject, who was described only as approximately 15 – 18 yrs of age wearing a white t-shirt, made a statement to the victim that he knew her. The victim stated to the suspect that she did not know him and continued on her run.

The suspect continued to follow her insisting that he knew her causing alarm to the victim. The victim attempted to increase her running speed to get away from the suspect when he tripped her to the ground. The suspect then jumped on top of her attempting to restrain her. While doing so, the suspect removed his white t-shirt, wrapped it around his fist and struck the victim several time in the face. During the struggle, the suspect was attempting to put his hands up her shorts and touch her inappropriately. He also took the victims I-Pod earphones and wrapped them around her neck in an attempt to choke her.

The victim informed police she was able to fight back enough to prevent him from getting full control and was able to strike him in the groin area. The suspect became dazed and then got up and fled in a nearby wooded area.

When troopers arrived, they located the victim and the concerned citizen behind metal bleachers to the softball field. The concerned citizen, who was the subject who arrived to work on the fields, found the victim lying there semi-conscious. The victim was taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Hospital, treated, and released for injuries sustained in the assault.

A search of the area by troopers, a K-9 and helicopter did not locate the suspect. Investigators have been able to create a composite sketch of the suspect and are asking for anyone with information on this crime to contact investigators at Troop 4 at 856.5850 ext 208 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.TIP.3333.
