Fort Collins, Colorado-
The Delaware State Police Law Enforcement Explorer Posts from Troop
3 (Kent County), Troop 4 (Georgetown) and Troop 5 (Bridgeville)
joined more than 3,000 other Explorers, adult leaders, and staff
from throughout the nation at the 16th Biennial National
Law Enforcement Exploring Conference from July 21st
through July 26th at Colorado State University.
The purpose of the conference was to
provide a training experience for Law Enforcement Explorers and to
contribute to the development of skills required in the law
enforcement profession. Exploring offers young people aged 14
through 20 an opportunity to learn about special interests and
vocational choices.
Founded in 1973, Law Enforcement
Exploring is a program for youth who are interested in the field of
law enforcement. Nearly 50,000 young people belong to over 3,000
Exploring posts that are sponsored by federal, state, and local law
enforcement agencies.
At the national conference the
Explorers have the opportunity to compete in both team and
individual competitions. The team competitions included: Arrest and
Search Techniques, Bomb Threat Response, Crime Prevention, Crime
Scene Search, Domestic Crisis, Shoot/Don’t Shoot, Hostage
Negotiation, Burglary in Progress, Traffic Accident Investigation,
Traffic Stop, White Collar Crime and Emergency First Aid.
Individual competitions included
Air-Pistol Competition, Bike Policing, Beam Hit Competition,
Emergency Vehicle Operations and a Physical Agility Test. In
addition to the competitions a wide range of seminars were offered
giving participants information on a host of topics such as Cyber
Crime Fraud, Fugitive Investigations, Narcotics Trafficking, Self
Defense, Mail Fraud, Protecting Our National Borders and
Surveillance Methods and Technology.
Outside of the conference the
Delaware State Police Explorers had an opportunity to enjoy the
tourist attractions of Colorado, including whitewater rafting on
Clear Creek, a jeep tour of Estes Park and bike ride down Pikes
Peak.
The Troop 3 (Kent County) Exploring
Post is overseen by Corporal Angela Garnsey, Trooper Heather Pepper
and Officer Christopher Swan of Felton Police Department. Nine
Explorers from this post attended the conference and competed. The
Explorers were assigned to teams and competed in Traffic Accident
Investigation, Shoot or Don’t Shoot, Domestic Crisis and Bomb Threat
and Search.
Detective Cheryl Arnold and Corporal
Richard Bratz oversee the Troop 4 (Georgetown) Exploring Post. The
nine Troop 4 Explorers competed in Crime Scene Investigation, Crime
Prevention and Burglary in Progress scenarios.
The final post to attend the
conference was Troop 5 (Bridgeville). Corporal Jennifer Struck and
Trooper First Class Gregory Cartwright oversee the Troop 5 Exploring
Post. Four Explorers attended and represented this post. At the
competition they were assigned Hostage Negotiations and Emergency
First Aid.
The Explorer Posts had the
opportunity to attend this conference as a result of fundraising
throughout the State. Each of the Explorers has put in numerous
hours of community service and has upheld the values of the
Exploring program and the Delaware State Police.
Each of the Exploring Posts welcome
individuals between the age of 14 and 20 who are presently enrolled
in school full-time, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and have no
criminal history to contact the Delaware State Police Troop nearest
their home to become a member their Exploring Post. |
