State Police Investigate Double Drowning
Released Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Selbyville
– The Delaware State Police are investigating the death of two
Hispanic males who apparently drowned earlier this evening in a
private pond located off Dirt Lane, east of Selbyville.
Emergency crews from several area fire companies responded to the
pond after witnesses observed two Hispanic male persons walk into
the pond in an attempt to swim. Witnesses reported to police these
subjects were standing in waist deep water when one of them
apparently went in too deep over their head and could not swim.
The male was struggling to stay afloat when the second subject
attempted to swim out to the struggling subject and help. Witnesses
reported that both persons could not swim and went under water
quickly and never resurfaced.
The witnesses who were fishing on another side of the pond
immediately responded to a nearby farmhouse and called 911. Divers
from the area fire companies located both Hispanic males submerged
in approximately 18 feet of water. They were deceased when located.
The State Medical Examiner responded to the scene and is assisting
with the investigation. Both subjects have been turned over to their
office pending an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.
The identity of these persons is currently unknown and when known
will be provided to the media. No foul play is suspected.
