Dover
– The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is
investigating a morning crash that critically injured a 44-year-old
Dover woman. Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 7:35
after it was reported a pick-up truck struck a vehicle on US 13 in
the area of Pine Wood Acres Drive.
Investigators
learned a 2004 Chevy Pick-up, operated by Charlette D. Pierson, 57
of Smyrna, was traveling southbound on US 13 in the left lane. A
2003 Ford Taurus, operated by Kathy M. Groover, 44 of Dover, was
attempting to cross over US 13 southbound from Pine Wood Acres Drive
when she failed to yield the right of way to the pick-up.
As a result,
the pick-up struck the Taurus on the driver’s door causing the
crash. Ms. Groover sustained critical injuries and was flown by DSP
helicopter to Christiana Hospital. Two children in the Taurus, a
3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, were also injured in the
crash. They were taken to Kent General Hospital and treated for
non-life threatening injuries. Ms. Pierson was also injured and
subsequently treated and released from Kent General Hospital.
All parties
were wearing seatbelts, including the children who were properly
restrained in child safety seats. Alcohol is not a factor. The
roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours as investigators
examined the crash scene. The crash remains under investigation.
