Newark
– The Delaware State Police and Newark Police Department have
arrested Vincent T. Gulley Jr., 38 of Wilmington after he was
apprehended by a Newark Police Officer during a suspicious vehicle
investigation.
Yesterday at
approximately 3:30 am a Newark patrol officer was checking on a
suspicious vehicle, a light colored minivan, in the parking lot of
Suburban Plaza on Elkton Rd. Coincidentally, the Suburban Plaza was
the location of the burglary that occurred on January 29 in which
the light colored minivan was captured on video surveillance as the
suspect vehicle.
The vehicle was
unoccupied and as the officer continued to investigate he located
Gulley walking on foot in the shopping center. Gulley told police
that he was in fact the operator of the van and could not account as
to what he was doing walking around the businesses at that hour. As
the investigation continued Newark Police were aware of several
recent burglaries the State Police were investigating that involved
a similar vehicle description.
DSP
investigators were contacted and responded to Newark PD to conduct a
joint investigation. A search warrant was later executed on the
vehicle, a Chrysler Town and Country minivan. Inside a white and
black colored scarf was located on the front passenger seat. The
scarf appears to be the same scarf that was worn by the suspect in
some of the recent burglaries. Two cinder blocks were located behind
the front passenger seat and police knew that in some cases
cinderblocks were used to damage the doors to the business to gain
entry.
At the conclusion of the investigation DSP was able to arrest
Gulley for the following burglaries: January 10 - Boxwood News &
Tobacco, 628 S. Maryland Ave., January 24 - Tobacco Plus, 602 Plaza
Drive, January 26 - The Cigarette Outlet, 617 Governors Place,
January 28 - The Cigarette Outlet, 786 Old Baltimore Pike and
February 3 - Books and Tobacco, 214 Lantana Drive. Gulley was
charged with 4 counts of Burglary 3rd degree, 3 counts of
Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony, 4 counts of
Theft, 5 counts of Criminal Mischief and 1 count of Attempted
Burglary 3rd degree.
He was also charged with the two following burglaries by Newark
PD: January 13 - Tobacco Zone, 1009 S. College Ave and January 29 -
Suburban Tobacco, 306 Suburban Drive. He was charged with 2 counts
of Burglary 3rd degree, 2 counts of Theft, 2 counts
Criminal Mischief and 2 counts of Wearing a Disguise During the
Commission of a Felony.
He is incarcerated at the Howard R. Young
Correctional Center in lieu of bail.
