Delaware State Police Probe Early Morning Fatal Crash Released Saturday January 3, 2009 0830 hrs

Date and Time: Saturday January 3, 2009, 0159 hrs

Location: US Route 40 W/B @ Railroad crossing, W/O Scotland Drive Newark

Victim: Billy Joe Bolen-33 of the unit block of Bellwood Drive Newark Injured Passenger: Nichole C. Bolen is the wife of Billy Bolen. Same address

Vehicle involved: 1999 Saturn SL2

Resume: The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated a crash early Saturday morning. The crash involved a 1999 Saturn SL2 driven by Billy Joe Bolen-33 of Newark. Also a passenger Nichole C. Bolen a passenger in the vehicle sustained a wrist fracture and a closed head injury. Nichole Bolen was transported to Christiana Hospital where she was treated and admitted for further observation and is listed in stable condition.

The investigation revealed the Saturn was westbound on US Route 40 and for a reason not yet determined the Saturn exited the right side of the roadway. Once off the roadway the vehicle lost control traveled up a grass embankment along the north side of the roadway and was vaulted into the air. The Saturn then struck a railroad crossing support light pole on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Billy Bolen was pronounced dead on scene. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to the causation of the crash. The investigation is continuing.
