DSP News Release: Friday, March 13, 2009- Patrol Car Involved in Morning Crash

Location of Incident: Route 9, north of Federal School Lane, New Castle, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Friday, March 13, 2009, at approximately 9:07 a.m.

Resume: Earlier today, a Troop 2 patrol officer was conducting mobile speed enforcement- method in which the Trooper utilizes his radar unit while in motion.  He was traveling Route 9 southbound approaching Federal School Lane when he clocked a vehicle traveling northbound at 28 mph over the speed limit (78 in a 50 mph zone). 

The Trooper activated his emergency equipment and moved to the right to execute a u-turn and go after the speeding car.  When the officer conducted the u-turn, his patrol car was struck by a vehicle which was also traveling southbound behind his- a 2000 Ford Focus (operated by a 19-year-old female from New Castle). 

Neither party reported being injured at the scene. 

No enforcement action has been taken and this crash remains under investigation. 

The names of those involved will be provided upon request after a 24-hour-period.
