DSP News Release: Tuesday, March 10, 2009- Roof Top Burglar Caught in the Act

Location of Incident:

  • Salem Village Square Shopping Center, Salem Church Road, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County
  • 695 East Chest Hill Road, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County

Suspect(s):  Joseph B. Pol, 19, of Village Circle, Newark, Delaware

Resume: For the past several weeks, Troopers from Troop 6 have investigated several burglaries in the Newark area in which the suspect entered the businesses via the roof.

Detectives developed a suspect and focused their attention on Joseph B. Pol.  Surveillance was initiated last evening and investigators caught Pol in the act of breaking into the Modern Nails in the Salem Village Square Shopping Center at approximately 1:04 a.m.  As Pol emerged from the business, officers approached and the bandit fled on foot.  He was apprehended in the Sandalwood Apartments after he tried to shed some of his clothing in an attempt to throw off the Troopers in pursuit.

Mr. Pol was transported back to Troop 2 for processing.  He was formally charged in the following cases with the associated crimes:

  • Modern Nails, Salem Village Square Shopping Center, (February 6th)- Burglary 3rd (felony), Theft (felony) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)
  • Modern Nails, Salem Village Square Shopping Center, (February 12th)- Burglary 3rd (felony), Theft (misdemeanor) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)
  • H&J Barber Shop, Salem Village Square Shopping Center, (February 12th)- Burglary 3rd (felony), Theft (misdemeanor) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)
  •  Fresh Hot Bagels, 695 East Chestnut Hill Road, (February 16th)- Burglary 3rd (felony) and Criminal Mischief (felony)
  • VIP Nails, 695 Eats Chestnut Hill Road, (February 16th)- Burglary 3rd (felony) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)
  • Modern Nails, Salem Village Square Shopping Center, (February 26th)- Burglary 3rd (felony) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)
  • Modern Nails, Salem Village Square Shopping Center, (March 10th)- Burglary 3rd (felony), Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony (felony), Possession of Burglars Tools (felony), Resisting Arrest (felony) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor)

Upon arraignment, Joseph Pol was released on a $5,600 unsecured bond.
