DSP News Release: Thursday, March 05, 2009, North Wilmington Man Charged with Assaulting Elderly Female

Location of Incident: 2000 block of Silverside Road, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at approximately 12:46 a.m.

Suspect(s):  Ryan Girard, 21, of Cedartree Lane in Wilmington, Delaware

Resume: Shortly after midnight on March 4th, Troopers were called to the 2000 block of Silverside Road for an injured 77-year-old female. 

This investigation revealed the victim was asleep upstairs in her residence when she was awoken by the sound of subjects yelling downstairs.  The victim responded down to the first floor where her grandson was pleading with a subject, identified as Ryan Girard, to leave.  Apparently, the victim’s grandson and Girard were acquaintances who drinking at the home. 

Witnesses advised Troopers that Girard became intoxicated, was verbally abusive and uncooperative.  The victim then approached the suspect and asked him to leave.  Girard allegedly walked out of the front door, turned around, and with both hands, he pushed the victim to the ground.  The assailant then fled the home on foot. 

The victim was transported from the scene by EMS to Wilmington Hospital where she was treated for a broken bone, an abrasion to her face and a cut lip. 

Officers were able to contact Girard on his cell phone and he agreed to turn himself in to authorities at Troop 1.  He arrived at the barracks several hours later and was formally charged with Assault 1st (felony).  He was released after posting a $5,000.00 secured bail.
