DIVISION OF STATE POLICE

Superintendent Thomas F. Mac Leish

DSP News Release: Friday, February 06, 2009- Supermarket Head Cashier Charged in $71,000.00 Theft

Location of Incident: Shop Rite- 1300 Rocky Run Parkway, Wilmington, Delaware

Date and Time of Occurrence: April of 2007 through December of 2008

Suspect: Kyle L. Schuldt, 33, of Clinton Street in Delaware City

Resume: On Thursday February 5th, Troopers were called to the Shop Rite on Route 202 for the report of an internal theft.

Officers arrived on the scene and were contacted by a Shop Rite human resources manager.  This individual advised a recent audit by a bookkeeper yielded startling news when it became apparent that a store employee had appropriated $71,000.00 in petty cash over a twenty (20) month period.

The theft was uncovered when the store bookkeeper noticed a recent petty cash withdraw for $1,000.00 by the store ‘head cashier’- Kyle L. Schuldt.  A cursory check into the withdraw records showed that Schuldt had taken the money out to purchase store supplies for a different Shop Rite location.  When no receipts could be found to substantiate this withdraw, a more thorough audit took place.  With this, store officials uncovered a total loss of $71,000.00 in cash dating back to April of 2007.

Troopers contacted Mr. Schuldt who cooperated with the investigation.  He was formally charged at Troop 1 Penny Hill with a single count of Felony Theft and released on a $10,000.00 unsecured bond.
