DIVISION OF STATE POLICE

Superintendent Thomas F. Mac Leish

DSP News Release: Friday, February 06, 2009, One Wild Ride for Joy-Riding Teen

Location of Incident: Concord Pike in the Area of Silverside Road

Date and Time of Occurrence:  Thursday, February 5, 2009, at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Suspects: Jordan S. Glick, 14, of Wilmington (DSP releases the names of juveniles for felony offenses)

Resume: Yesterday afternoon, a traffic crash occurred on Concord Pike at the exit from the Concord Mall.  A Hyundai Santa Fe, operated by 14-year-old Jordan S. Glick, of Wilmington, was passing on the shoulder on the northbound lanes of Concord Pike when this vehicle ran over a series of traffic cones and struck a vehicle operated by Christine Meinel, 49, of West Grove, Pennsylvania.  Ms. Meinel was exiting the Concord Mall Parking lot when her Hyundai sedan was struck.  After the crash, the Hyundai SUV fled the scene.

Ms. Meinel followed the Hyundai SUV and called State Police Dispatch to provide the fleeing vehicles location as it fled through several neighborhoods. This information was in turn given to responding Troopers who intercepted the Hyundai SUV on Silverside Road at Floral Drive.

Officers positioned themselves behind the Hyundai SUV and signaled for this vehicle to pull over but the SUV refused to stop.  Officers followed the Hyundai for approximately one minute when they disengaged the pursuit due to the reckless driving by the operator.  Moments later, officers came upon the Hyundai SUV which had lost control on Webster Road.  The SUV apparently ran into an embankment and a tree.  The operator of this car got out and started to flee on foot when officers ordered him to the ground.  Once in custody, Troopers were surprised to find this hit-and-run suspect to be 14-year-old Glick.

This investigation revealed the teen had taken his parents car without their consent earlier in the day. He was transported back to Troop 1 were he was formally charged with the following offenses: Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal (felony), Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle Without the Owners Consent (misdemeanor), Leaving the Scene of an Injury Crash, Aggressive Driving, Reckless Driving, Driving without a License, Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device, Failure to Report a Collision, Failure to Provide Information at a Crash Scene, Unsafe Speed and four counts of Fail to Stop at a Stop Sign.

Bail was set at $2,200.00 unsecured and Glick was released into his parents’ custody.

It was noted the Glick was not injured; however, Ms. Meinel sustained minor, non-life threatening injuries.
