Delaware
State Police have determined that the 1995 Ford Explorer was
traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and the operator was
driving in an aggressive manner. Witnesses advised at one point the
Explorer passed between two other vehicles straddling the dotted
center line. The operator of the Explorer drove onto the right
shoulder of I-95 northbound, then over steered causing him to lose
control. The Explorer next crossed the wide grass median and drove
up a dirt mound. The Explorer began to roll as it entered the
southbound lanes of I-95 southbound and eventually rolled on top of
the 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis. Both the driver and passenger of
the Explorer were ejected from their vehicle. The passenger of the
Ford Explorer was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the
Ford Explorer was transported to Christiana Hospital where he died.
Vehicle
2 the 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis caught fire as a result of the
crash. Passing motorist pulled the operator of the Mercury from the
driver’s seat however The 72 year old driver died at the scene. The
78 year old female passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle
by Fire and Ambulance crews. Motorist and Troopers utilized
numerous fire extinguishers attempting to keep the fire at bay until
Fire crews could arrive. The 78 year old female passenger was
transported to Christiana Hospital and is currently listed in
critical condition.

Fatal Collision on I-95 N/O Marsh Road

The
Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is currently on
scene investigating a crash involving multiple fatalities. The
crash occurred on the southbound lanes of travel on I-95 North of
Marsh Road. A preliminary investigation revealed that a green 1995
Ford Explorer was traveling N/B on I-95 when it lost control
crossing the median and entering the southbound lanes of travel.
The Explorer then crashed into a Blue 1993 Mercury passenger car.
As a result of the crash both occupants of the Ford Explorer a 50
year old male driver from Wilmington and a 47 year old female
passenger also from Wilmington died at the scene due to multiple
injuries. The 72 year old operator of the Mercury sedan died at the
scene from injuries sustained in the crash. A passenger in the
Mercury a 78 year old female is listed in critical condition and was
transported to Christiana Hospital. Both occupants of the Mercury
are from Philadelphia.
A
preliminary cause of the crash appears to be speed, however the
investigation is ongoing.
Updated
information regarding the names of the victims will be released once
family members have been notified.

Resume:
PRELIMINARY RELEASE- The Delaware State Police is currently on the
scene of a two vehicle crash which occurred on I-95 southbound,
north of Marsh Road. At least two people are confirmed deceased at
the scene with two others in grave condition. I-95 southbound is
shut down at this time. Only the right lane northbound is open.
Traffic is being diverted onto I-495 southbound at the Pennsylvania
state line.
