DSP News Release:  Wednesday, January 14, 2009- Pedestrian Struck on Route 202

Location of Incident:  Route 202 northbound, just north of Naamans Road, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence: Wednesday, January 14, 2009, approximately 8:00 a.m.

Resume: In the middle of rush hour this morning, Troopers and emergency personnel were called to Route 202 and Naamans Road for a pedestrian crash. 

A 2001 Dodge Stratus (operated by Christopher Shaw, 23, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania) was traveling northbound on Route 202 when his vehicle struck a pedestrian- identified as Betty Johnson, 61, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

Witnesses reported Ms. Johnson was attempting to cross Route 202, east to west, when she ran into the path of the Dodge.  Ms. Johnson was struck by the front of the car and also impacted the windshield.  She was flown from the scene to Christiana Hospital where she was last listed in stable condition.

The area Ms. Johnson was crossing the street was not a marked crosswalk.  She was cited for Failing to Cross at a Crosswalk. 

Mr. Shaw was not injured. 

The roadway was shut down for approximately 20 minutes.
