Update #1- Fatal Crash on Route 48

Released- Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Wilmington- Route 48 opened for through traffic at approximately 10:15 a.m.

A preliminary investigation into this crash has revealed a Ford Windstar was traveling westbound on Route 48 when it crossed over the eastbound lanes and traveled off of the roadway.  The van overturned, ejecting the male driver.

It is believed the crash occurred several hours prior to when it was reported.  This area of Route 48 is not a lighted roadway and the van was positioned approximately 12’ below the roadway in a ravine.   The van was apparently finally visible to passing traffic after sunrise.

It should be known that the side of the van had “EMT” printed on the front doors.  This vehicle seems to be a privately owned, non-emergency, medical transport vehicle which was loaded with various types of equipment and supplies.

This investigation is ongoing.  Additional details will be disseminated later this afternoon.
