Fatal Pedestrian Crash at Hares Corner

New Castle-
The
pedestrian who died in this morning’s crash is identified as Paula
Carpenter, 46, of New Castle.
Ms.
Carpenter was walking across the northbound lanes of US 13 just
south of Lisa Drive from the east side of the roadway toward the
west side.
A 2002 Dodge Neon (operated by Jason Doerflein, 32 of Port Deposit,
Maryland) was traveling northbound in the left lane of Route 13.
Ms. Carpenter then walked directly into the path of this vehicle
resulting in the initial impact.
After this impact, Ms. Carpenter landed in the roadway. She was
then struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer (operated by Edgardo Ortega, 27,
of Newark) and a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (operated by Yvette Price,
42, of New Castle).
It was dark at the time of the collision and Ms. Carpenter was not
wearing reflective clothing or carrying a light. She was also
nearly struck by other vehicles while she walked across the
roadway. A witness reported she and another vehicle had to swerve
to avoid her.
This crash remains under investigation and no charges are expected
to be filed.

Tuesday, January 06, 2009, approximately 6:40 a.m.
Resume:
Approximately 20 minutes ago, Troopers responded to the area of
Route 13 northbound, just south of Hares Corner, for a fatal crash.
This incident
involved a vehicle and a pedestrian. The pedestrian has been
pronounced dead at the scene.
All lanes of
Route 13 northbound have been shut down at Lisa Drive while this
incident is investigated- this scene is extensive. Motorists should
seek alternative routes.
A more
complete news release will be disseminated later this morning when
the details surrounding this crash are known and confirmed.
