Released- Tuesday, January 06, 2009

New Castle- The pedestrian who died in this morning’s crash is identified as Paula Carpenter, 46, of New Castle.

Ms. Carpenter was walking across the northbound lanes of US 13 just south of Lisa Drive from the east side of the roadway toward the west side.

A 2002 Dodge Neon (operated by Jason Doerflein, 32 of Port Deposit, Maryland) was traveling northbound in the left lane of Route 13.  Ms. Carpenter then walked directly into the path of this vehicle resulting in the initial impact.

After this impact, Ms. Carpenter landed in the roadway.  She was then struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer (operated by Edgardo Ortega, 27, of Newark) and a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (operated by Yvette Price, 42, of New Castle).

It was dark at the time of the collision and Ms. Carpenter was not wearing reflective clothing or carrying a light.  She was also nearly struck by other vehicles while she walked across the roadway.  A witness reported she and another vehicle had to swerve to avoid her.
