DSP News Release: Saturday, September 19, 2009- Mentally Disturbed Subject Threatened Troopers with Knives

Location: Churchmans Road and Route 7, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County

Date of Occurrence: Friday, September 18th, 2009, at approximately 11:00 a.m.

Suspect(s): Ronald Jackson, 49, of Christiana Road in Newark, Delaware

Resume: Yesterday morning, Troop 9 patrol units were dispatched to the Christiana Mall for the report of a man with two knives at the bus stop.  Prior to the officers’ arrival, RECOM (the DSP dispatch center) advised them that the subject just boarded a Dart bus which departed the mall.

An area canvas was conducted and Troopers spotted the bus on Route 7 turning onto Churchmans Road.  The bus was stopped and the suspect in question, Ronald Jackson, was asked to step off and speak with Troopers.  He complied without incident.

Once off the bus, Jackson refused to allow officers to check him for weapons.  This was for the officers’ safety. He then became agitated and swung at one of the Troopers, punching him in the face.   The second officer pepper sprayed the suspect; however, it had little effect.  Jackson then produced two knives which were concealed on his person and began to lunch at officers.

The Troopers on the scene worked very well together, keeping the suspect at a distance and at bay.  They summonsed a support unit with a Tazer and a New Castle County Police Officer responded.  The Tazer was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  The Trooper who was assaulted was not injured and did not require medical attention.

Jackson was transported from the scene to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation.  Warrants were completed charging Jackson with two counts of Aggravated Menacing (felony), Offensive Touching (misdemeanor), Resisting Arrest (misdemeanor) and Carrying a Concealed Deadly Instrument (misdemeanor).  Upon his release from hospital care, he will be formally charged.
