DSP News Release: Monday, September 14, 2009- Newark Man Charged in Internal Theft at Local Landmark

Location: Steve’s Tavern, 1204 Centerville Road, Wilmington, Delaware

Date of Occurrence: September of 2008 through August of 2009

Suspect(s): Jonathan M. Miller, 35, of Elliott Street in Newark, Delaware

Resume: Here in Northern New Castle County, Steve’s Tavern, located directly across from the GM Boxwood Plant, is considered a local landmark.  Last Tuesday, September 8th, Troopers were called to this location to look into an internal theft.

This investigation revealed that store employee, Jonathan Miller, had executed multiple fraudulent transactions over the course of a 13-month period where he pocketed cash from the till. In all, Miller appropriated over $6,000.00.

To commit this theft, Miller was found to have voided out multiple transactions at the register in an attempt to cover his tracks and account for the missing money.  A review of store surveillance video shows Miller physically taking money from the register and placing the cash in his own pocket.  A thorough audit of Miller’s activity in the store yielded approximately 70 incidents of theft.

Warrants were completed and Jonathan Miller was notified of his wanted status.  He was arrested on Sunday the 13th and formally charged with Theft (felony).  He was arraigned and released on a $2,000.00 unsecured bond.
