DSP News Release: Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Location: Southbound SR 896 at Glasgow Avenue, Newark, DE
Date of Occurrence: Saturday, September 5th, 2009 at approximately 2:46pm
Resume: On Saturday, September 5th, 2009, Delaware State Troopers were summoned to the location of southbound SR 896 at the ramp leading to the Old Rt. 896, reference to a motorcycle fatality.
The investigation revealed that a 36-year old male of Dover, identified as Brian F. Burgette, was operating a 2007 Kawasaki EX6 motorcycle, and failed to negotiate the curve and traveled through a gore and into the grass. The motorcycle tumbled in the grass, ejecting the Mr. Burgette. Mr. Burgette's body was found today at approximately 2:46 p.m. He was pronounced at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Investigators believe the crash occurred back on September 3rd sometime after 1:10 in the morning.
Mr. Burgette was last seen traveling southbound on SR 896 when he became separated from a co-worker on September 3rd, 2009 at approximately 1:10 am. Mr. Burgette's co-worker was also operating a motorcycle. The two became separated when Mr. Burgette's friend was caught at a red light following their departure together from a local establishment in Newark. Mr. Burgette was on his way to his residence in Dover. The friend Mr. Burgette was traveling with and subsequently separated from continued to his residence located in southern New Castle County.
After Mr. Burgette failed to return home and was unaccounted for by loved ones, Dover Police Department was contacted and a missing persons report was filed. Due to the amount of time that had passed since Mr. Burgette's last known contact, family and friends decided to attempt to retrace his path on September 3rd. The co-worker that was initially traveling with Mr. Burgette checked the area several times prior to locating a divot in the grass and pieces of plastic from Mr. Burgette's motorcycle. After entering the densely wooded area Mr. Burgette's friend located his body and immediately called 911.
Members of the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the crash site and with the assistance of DelDot was able to fully investigate the crash. At the present time the investigation is on-going.
At the present time it is unknown if Mr. Burgette was wearing a helmet and if alcohol was a factor.
