DSP News Release: Wednesday, September 02, 2009- Fatal Crash Reported on Route 13 in New Castle
New Castle: The following offers the details surrounding last night’s fatal pedestrian crash on Route 13.
The pedestrian killed in last night incident is identified as Sarel Avila-Lopez, 71, of New Castle, Delaware. The vehicle involved was a 2006 Hyundai Elantra operated by Kathryn Jean Beardsley, 19, of New Castle, Delaware.
The Hyundai was taveling Route 13 southbound in the left lane approaching the intersection with Marsh Lane (just south of Memorial Drive). This vehicle had a green light. The pedestrian was crossing Route 13 from the west side of the highway to the east. She was wearing all black clothing and was not crossing the roadway in a marked crosswalk. Ms. Lopez walked directly into the path of the Hyundai resulting in the impact. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms. Beardsley was not injured.
This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Location: Route 13 southbound, south of Memorial Drive in New Castle, Delaware
Date of Occurrence: Wednesday, September 02, 2009, at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Resume: At approximately 9:30 p.m. this evening, Troopers and emergency personnel were called for a fatal pedestrian related crash on Route 13 southbound, just south of Memorial Drive in New Castle.
Preliminary reports indicate this crash involved a single vehicle and a female pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
This investigation is in its early stages and no additional details will be made available tonight.
A more complete release will be forthcoming tomorrow, by noon, when the facts of this case are known and confirmed.
