DSP News Release: Wednesday, September 02, 2009- Details of I-95 Crash Released

 

Location: I-95 northbound, just north of Marsh Road, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

 

Date of Occurrence: Wednesday, September 02, 2009, at 8:13 a.m.

 

Resume: The following news release outlines the serious injury crash from this morning on I-95.

 

The vehicles involved are as follows:

  • 2001 Ford Focus, operated by Laura Shellenberger, 26, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania
  • 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pick up, operated by Michael Carroll, 26, of Wilmington, Delaware
  • 2009 Hyundai Sonata, operated by Brian Emmons, 23, of Hockessin, Delaware

 

On I-95 northbound, a minor traffic crash occurred in the area of Carr road.  Traffic was coming to a stop behind it.  The Ford Focus, which was approaching this crash, was slowing to almost a stop in the left lane. 

 

The Chevrolet truck was traveling at full speed in the right lane also approaching the crash ahead.  The operator of the pick up saw traffic in front of him was stopped so he swerved to the left lane where he then rear ended the Ford Focus. The pickup began to overturn as it continued forward.  It then struck the Hyundai. 

 

Ms. Shellenberger, who was extricated from her vehicle by mechanical means, was airlifted from the scene by Trooper 4 to Christiana Hospital.  Her injuries are considered life threatening. 

 

Mr. Carroll was transported from the scene by ambulance to Christiana Hospital. His injuries are not considered life threatening. 

 

Mr. Emmons was not injured.

 

This crash is now being investigated by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and charges have not yet been filed. 

 

Motorists are advised to avoid the area until approximately 12:00 noon.
