Updated DSP News Release: Monday, October 12, 2009- Overturned Tractor Trailer on I-495
Wilmington- The following consists of additional details related to the I-495 crash from this afternoon.
A 1997 Nissan Maxima (operated by Wendi Ross, 42, of New Castle) was traveling I-495 southbound in the center lane. A 1996 Freightliner tractor-trailer (operated by William A. Walsh, III, 28, of Raleigh, North Carolina) was traveling I-495 southbound in the left lane. The tractor trailer was hauling a flat bed loaded with recyclable materials.
The Freightliner changed lanes from the left lane to the center lane and clipped the Nissan. Both vehicles lost control and the truck started to jack-knife. It struck the guardrail multiple times and its cargo released. The Maxima then collided with the tractor trailer a second time as both vehicles were coming to a stop.
Ms. Ross was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Walsh was not injured.
Members of the DSP Truck Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and conducted an inspection of the truck . Two federal violation were noted related to Mr. Walsh's log book and he was cited with those associated offenses. The officer investigating this crash cited Mr. Walsh with Unsafe Speed, Failure to Signal and Aggressive Driving.
Traffic is expected to be impacted until approximately 6:00 p.m.

Location: southbound on I-495, north of Edgemoor Road, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County
Date and Time: Monday, October 12, 2009, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Resume: Delaware State Troopers and emergency personnel are currently responding to a crash scene on I-495 southbound, north of Edgemoor Road.
Preliminary reports indicate this crash involves an overturned tractor trailer. All southbound lanes are currently blocked and traffic is being diverted at the Delaware State Line onto I-95 southbound.
Motorists should avoid the area.
One minor injury is reported.
A more complete release will be disseminated once information is known and confirmed.
