Updated DSP News Release #2: Thursday, October 01, 2009- Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Route 273

 

Newark-  The vehicle involved in this morning’s crash was a 2002 Chevrolet Tracker which was operated by Ava Rodriguez-Silva, 54, of Rising Sun, Maryland.

 

The pedestrian who died in this crash was identified as Anita Collins, 45, of Newark, Delaware.  A fingerprint check was required to confirmed her identity.

 

The Tracker was traveling eastbound on Route 273 in the area of University Plaza.  Ms. Collins was crossing the roadway from north to south and walked directly into the path of the Tracker resulting in the impact. 

 

Ms. Collins was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced dead. 

 

Ms. Rodriguez-Silva was not injured.  

 

Investigators noted it was dark outside at the time of this crash and there were no overhead streetlights.  Speed is not considered to be a factor.  Ms. Collins was not crossing the roadway at a marked crosswalk.

 

This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. 

 

Traffic was impacted for approximately 2 hours.

Newark- Route 273 has been reopened in both directions.  Traffic is still heavy through the scene.

DSP News Release: Thursday, October 01, 2009- Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Route 273

 

Location: Route 273 westbound in front of University Plaza , Newark, Delaware, New Castle County

 

Date of Occurrence: Thursday, October 01, 2009, at approximately 6:15 a.m.

 

Resume: Investigators from the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are currently on the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash.  The location is Route 273 westbound in front of University Plaza. 

 

Preliminary reports indicate this crash occurred in the roadway and involved a small SUV and a female pedestrian. 

 

Traffic is heavy at this time and motorists should seek alternative routes. 

 

An additional release will be forthcoming when details are known and confirmed.
