Updated DSP News Release: Monday, November 09, 2009- Subject Targets Two Stores in University Plaza Seeking Loot
Newark- Investigators have made an arrest in the attempted robbery of two Newark area stores from October 29th. Those incidents are outlined below in the original press release.
Detectives were able to secure surveillance video from these incidents and got a break in the case when a New Castle County Police Officer recognized the suspect in those images. Warrants were subsequently obtained for Joe C. Watson, 37, of McCabe Avenue in New Castle.
He was arrested on Friday, November 6th and formally charged with two counts of Attempted Robbery (felony). He was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $40,000.00 secured bail.

DSP News Release: Friday, October 30, 2009- Subject Targets Two Stores in University Plaza Seeking Loot
Location: The Payless Shoe Store and the Happy Harrys Drug Store, both located in the University Plaza Shopping Center, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Thursday, October 29, 2009, at 9:03 p.m.
Suspect(s): Dark complected black male, 6’04”, 215 pounds with a beard, wearing black jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt.
Resume: At approximately 9:00 p.m. last night, Troopers were dispatched to the Payless Shoe Store for an attempted robbery report.
In this case, the suspect described above entered the store and approached the service counter. He presented a note to the clerk advising he had a gun and demanded cash. When the clerk advised her till did not have any money, the suspect fled the scene.
A few minutes later, this same suspect entered the adjacent Happy Harrys and again approached the service counter. He asked the clerk if she had any money and when she advised “no,” the suspect played it off as a joke and asked for a pack of cigarettes. The clerk turned to grab the pack of smokes and the suspect ran out of the store.
