DSP News Release: Saturday, May 23, 2009- Two Vehicles Overturn in Route 1 Crash

Location of Incident:  Route 1 northbound, south of Route 299, Middletown, Delaware, New Castle County

Date and Time of Occurrence:  Saturday, May 23, 2009, 3:31 p.m.

Resume: At about half-past-three this afternoon, Troopers and emergency personnel were called to the area of Route 1 northbound, south of Route 299, for a two vehicle crash.

A 2004 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van was traveling northbound on Route 1 in the left lane.

A 1996 Ford Explorer (operated by Fred Latham, 21, of New Castle) was traveling Route 1 northbound approaching the mini-van.

For an unknown reason, the Ford rear-ended the Chrysler.  As a result of this impact, both vehicles overturned.  An occupant in the mini-van, Adam Lex, 27, of Bear, was ejected.

The Ford came to rest in the roadway, while the Chrysler ended up off of the roadway.

Mr. Lex was flown from the scene to Christiana Hospital where he was last listed in serious, but stable condition.

Mr. Latham was transported to Christiana Hospital where he is expected to be treated and released later this evening.

Investigators have yet to determine who was operating the mini-van.  Although it appears as though Mr. Lex was at the wheel, reports from the scene indicated another subject may have fled the scene on foot.  These reports have not been substantiated.

No charges have been filed and this investigation is ongoing.
