DSP News Release: Thursday, May 21, 2009- Driver Allegedly Falls Asleep at the Wheel in Late Night Crash

 

Location of Incident: Route 896 southbound at Old Baltimore Pike, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County

 

Date and Time of Occurrence: Thursday, May 21, 2009, at approximately 2:00 a.m.

 

Resume:  At approximately 2:00 a.m. this morning Troopers responded to the intersection of Route 896 at Old Baltimore Pike in reference to an injury crash with an overturned vehicle.

 

A 1988 Ford Bronco (operated by Heather Harrington, 21, of Elkton, Maryland) was stopped southbound on Route 896 at Old Baltimore Pike in the right lane at a red light. 

 

A 2005 Toyota Tundra (operated by Jack Wills, 64, of Alexandria, Virginia) approached the Bronco from behind and rear ended same.  The Bronco was pushed into the intersection and overturned. 

 

Ms. Harrington and her passenger, David Norris, 25, also of Elkton, were both transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

 

Authorities believed that Mr. Wills fell asleep at the wheel prior to the crash.  Almost 50’ of skid marks were observed on the roadway leading up to the impact as well. 

 

Jack Wills was cited with Inattentive Driving. 

 

Traffic flow was restricted for approximately one hour while this crash was investigated.
