DSP News Release: Thursday, May 28, 2009- Pedestrian Struck on Kirkwood Highway
Location of Incident: Route 2 eastbound at Maple Avenue, Elsmere, Delaware, New Castle County
Date and Time of Occurrence: Thursday, May 28, 2009, at approximately 12:31 p.m.
Resume: Troopers and emergency personnel responded to Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) and Maple Avenue today for a pedestrian related crash.
A 2000 Mazda B25 pick-up truck (operated by Stanley Bailey, 59, of New Castle, Delaware) was traveling Route 2 eastbound in the right lane approaching Maple Avenue.
Three pedestrians, one of which being Maria Medina, 19, of Elsmere, Delaware, were crossing Route 2, from the north side of the roadway to the south, in a marked cross walk.
Allegedly, the pedestrians started to cross the roadway when the crossing signal was blinking- indicating Route 2 traffic was going to have the right of way soon. Just prior to making it all the way across the street, Route 2 traffic received a green light. The operator of the Mazda then continued eastbound just as Ms. Medina stepped in front of his vehicle. The impact forced Ms. Medina to the ground and she sustained a head injury.
Maria Medina was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where she was last listed in serious, but stable condition.
Mr. Bailey was not injured.
This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
