Resume:
Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash, which occurred on Silverside Road at Quincy Drive this morning.
On Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 6:39am, Troopers responded to Silverside Road at Quincy Drive for reports of a one vehicle crash. A witness stopped behind the vehicle advised Troopers that the 2001 Chevy Malibu was stopped on Quincy Drive so that the operator, a 70-year old North Wilmington woman, could put letters in the mailbox located at the entrance to the Green Acres development. After stopping along side the drive-up mailbox, the Malibu suddenly accelerated from Quincy Drive across both lanes of Silverside Road and ultimately struck a utility pole.
The utility pole was broken and displaced upon impact, but it did not fall. The operator was transported to Christiana Emergency Center where she was pronounced dead. At this time, it is unknown if the operator died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash or from a sudden medical emergency.
This release will be updated when more information becomes available.
