Troopers Swift Actions Result in Apprehension of Purse Snatching Bandit

Released-Sunday, June 21, 2009

Wilmington-Shortly after 9:30 this morning, Troop 6 patrol officers responded to the front parking lot of the Happy Harry's (1900 Maryland Ave/Canby Park Shopping Center) for the report of a robbery.

An investigation revealed that the victim, who is confined to a wheel chair, had just exited the Happy Harry’s with her young son.  The victim’s purse was situated on her lap and secured around one arm, when the juvenile suspect approached her from behind, forcibly removed her purse, then fled on foot towards the rear of the shopping center.

Troopers viewed the store’s surveillance video, from which they were able to identify and locate a witness.  Information provided by the witness and developed by Troop 6 Troopers led investigators to building "R" of the Canby Park Apartments where they located and identified the suspect, Aaron Mills, 17, of Wilmington, hiding in the common area stairwell.

Mills was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 6, where he was later video arraigned at JP 20 and formally charged with one count of Robbery 2nd (Felony).

Mills was committed to the New Castle County Detention Center in reference to default of $5,000 secured bond.
