DSP News Release: Thursday, June 18, 2009- Need to Retrieve Cell Phone Results in Crash with Pole / Parked Cars

Location of Incident: Route 4 and Elmhurst Place, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County

Date of Occurrence:  Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 11:21 p.m.

Resume:  Late last evening, Troopers responded to Route 4 and Elmhurst Place for a report of a vehicle crash with a utility pole down.

Officers arrived on the scene and closed the roadway as live wires were hanging down.

This investigation revealed Patrick Lemon, 29, of South Maryland Avenue in Wilmington, was driving westbound on Route 4 in his 2008 Honda Civic.  Mr. Lemon dropped his cell phone so he reached over to pick it up.

With his attention diverted, the Honda traveled north up on the sidewalk where it struck a utility pole.  The pole was knocked over and the Honda continued forward and onto Elmhurst Place.  Here, it rear-ended a 1998 Lexus parked on the shoulder.  This impact forced the Lexus forward where it then struck a parked 1999 Plymouth Acclaim.  Neither vehicle was occupied.

Mr. Lemon was not injured.  He was cited with Inattentive Driving.

The roadway was shut down for about 1.5 hours.
