Updated DSP News Release: Saturday, June 06, 2009- Serious Injury Crash Reported on I-495
New Castle- The operators of the vehicles involved are as follows: · Mercedes- Thomas Benzinger, 42, of Newark, Delaware · VW- Eric Eisenberg, 40, of Wilmington, Delaware · Dodge- Nathaniel Johnson, 70, of Newark, Delaware
No charges have been filed and this crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call 302-834-2620 ext. 287.
DSP News Release: Saturday, June 06, 2009- Serious Injury Crash Reported on I-495
Location of Incident: I-495 southbound at Route 13, New Castle, Delaware, New Castle County
Date and Time of Occurrence: Saturday, June 06, 2009, at approximately 2:22 a.m.
Resume: Troopers are investigating an early morning crash that occurred on I-495 southbound at Route 13.
A 2000 Mercedes 230 was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed in the center lane.
The Mercedes approached a 1993 Volkswagen Eurovan in the center lane. The Mercedes swerved to the left and lost control. It traveled into the center median where it impacted a dirt burm. The Mercedes deflected back into the southbound lanes as it overturned. The operator was then ejected.
Debris flying off of the Mercedes struck the Eurovan.
The Mercedes ended up in the center lane of travel. A 1993 Dodge Ram pick-up was traveling southbound in the center lane and struck the Mercedes.
The operator of the Mercedes was transported from the scene to Christiana Hospital where he was last listed critical condition.
Alcohol is a considered a factor in this crash on the part of the operator of the Mercedes.
The names of those involved will be released later today after the family of the operator of the Mercedes is notified.
