DSP News Release: Friday, July 31, 2009- Quick Action by Mall Security Yields Jewelry Theft Suspect
Location: Janvier Jewelers, Christiana Mall, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Thursday, July 30th, 2009, at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Suspect(s): Edward Madison, 52, of Prest Street in Detroit, Michigan
Resume: Yesterday morning, Troopers were called to the Christiana Mall for a felony theft suspect in custody with mall security.
This investigation revealed, Edward Madison, and two unidentified male suspects, entered the Janvier Jewelers in the Christiana Mall. The two unidentified males distracted the sales staff while Madison broke a lock to a jewelry showcase. Madison removed two diamond rings, valued at $7,900.00. The bandits fled the store with the goods and mall security was immediately notified.
Within moments, Madison was placed into custody in the parking lot by the security staff. The other two suspects, identified only as black males in their 30’s or 40’s, eluded capture.
Initially, Madison provided Troopers with a fraudulent driver’s license identifying himself as Brian Day. He also signed official court documents with this false name. A finger print check revealed his true identity.
Madison was formally charged with the following offenses: Shoplifting (felony), Forgery (felony), Hindering Prosecution (felony), Conspiracy 2nd (felony), Criminal Impersonation (misdemeanor) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor). He was arraigned and ordered held at the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of a $9,000.00 secured bond.
It is unknown at this time what ties Madison has to this area.
