Updated DSP News Release #2: Monday, July 27, 2009- Two-Vehicle Crash Closes Route 1 Southbound

Middletown- The vehicles involved in this crash are as follows:

·        1991 Ford Van, operated by Patrick Turner, 21, of Virginia Beach, Virginia

·        2007 International Tractor-Trailer, operated by Lloyd Jones, 51, of Richard Bassett Road in Dover, Delaware

The Ford was traveling on Route 1 southbound, in the middle lane, toward the top of the Roth Bridge when this vehicle expereinced a mechanical failure.  This failure caused the van to repidly decrease speed.

The tractor-trailer approached the van and was unable to avoid same.  A rear ended impact ensued and both vehicles veered to the right.  They both then errupted into flames.

The van had five occupants.  Four of the five people were able to escape from the burning vehicle; however, a 21-year-old rear seat passenger, a female, was trapped inside.  She was pronounced dead at the scene once the flames were extinguished.  The release of her name is pending a notification to the next of kin.

A computer check revealed Mr. Turner was driving with a suspended license.

This crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
