DSP News Release: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. Wawa Robbery Probed
Location of Incident: Wawa, 1 Salem Village Square, Newark, Delaware, New Castle County
Date and Time of Occurrence: Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at approximately 2:18 a.m.
Suspect(s): Black male, 20-25 years of age, 5'6" tall, average build, wearing a black ski mask, black trench coat, dark colored pants, black shoes, yellow latex cleaning gloves.
Resume: Detectives are seeking the identity of a robbery suspect who targeted a Newark area Wawa store early Tuesday morning.
This investigation revealed a male suspect entered the Wawa store in the Salem Village Square Shopping Center and demanded cash from the clerk. The Wawa employee complied with the robber’s demands by turning over an undisclosed amount of money- actually in the form of rolls of coins. The suspect was last seen running from the scene northbound toward Sandalwood Drive.
Shortly after the incident, a Troop 9 patrol officer came across a gold Pontiac Bonneville traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of southbound Route 1 and Route 273. The vehicle had a fictitious temporary tag of and failed to pull over when the Trooper activated his emergency equipment.
A vehicle pursuit ensued and the Bonneville came to a stop in the area of Rt. 13 and the Pine Valley Apartments. The operator fled the scene and eluded capture. Inside the vehicle, Troopers located yellow latex gloves, black trench coat like jacket, a black ski mask and the stolen rolled coins.
This incident remains under investigation.
