DSP News Release: Monday, August 10, 2009- Drugs and Handgun Recovered during Traffic Stop
Location: Lancaster Pike and Court Drive, Wilmington, Delaware, New Castle County
Date of Occurrence: Friday, August 7, 2009, at 11:44 p.m.

Resume: On the above date and time a Troop 6 patrol officer conducted a traffic stop on a Green Lincoln Town car for speeding on Lancaster Pike and Court Drive.
Upon making contact with the driver, Rashaad Benson, the officer could smell the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The other occupants of the vehicle were identified as Cordele Stewart and Al Butcher. The Lincoln was found to have been registered to Stewart’s grandmother.
A search of the vehicle yielded approximately 8 grams of marijuana and a loaded Kel-Tec 9mm handgun.
A routine computer check yielded the following results: no one in the vehicle had a valid driver’s license and each of the subjects was listed as persons prohibited from possessing a firearm.
All suspects were charged with Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (felony), Conspiracy (felony), Possession of Marijuana (misdemeanor) and Person Prohibited of Possessing or Controlling a Firearm (felony). Benson was also charged with Speeding and Driving without a License.
Benson was released on a $12,500.00 unsecured bail and released to a family member. Stewart and Butcher were both issued $12,500 secured bonds and were released after posting same.
