DSP On-Scene Crash Involving Bicyclist and Two Motor Vehicles

Released - April 18th, 2009

New Castle - On Saturday, April 18th, 2009, at approximately 9:50 pm , Delaware State Police responded to the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway, west of Newport Gap Pike, reference a physical injury crash.

The investigation revealed that a 2007 Toyota SUV, operated by Mr. Paul Meikle, 32, of New Castle, was traveling eastbound in the left lane of Kirkwood Highway.

A 16-year old bicyclist attempted to cross the eastbound lanes from the north side of the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk.  The bicyclist was struck by the Toyota SUV.  Upon impact the juvenile was thrown into the center lane of travel.

The juvenile was then struck by a second vehicle.  The second vehicle is a Plymouth Neon, operated by Ms. Nicole Simms, 26, of Claymont, who was traveling in the center lane of Kirkwood Highway.

The juvenile has been transported to Christiana Hospital for serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Both Mr. Meikle and Ms. Simms were wearing their seatbelts and did not sustain any injuries.  Alcohol is not a factor in this crash.

The roadway was closed for approximately one-hour and has been reopened.  The bicyclist is expected to be cited for the crash
