DSP News Release: Wednesday, April 29, 2009- Trooper Involved in Departmental Crash

 

Location of Incident: Route 4 at Route 141 in Newport, Delaware, New Castle Ccounty

 

Date and Time of Occurrence: Tuesday, April 29, 2009, at approximately 7:34 p.m.

 

Resume: Yesterday, at approximately 7:34 p.m., Corporal Mike Butkus was working routine patrol when a call for help came from a Newport Police Officer who was on the scene of a fight in progress at Ethan Court in Newport.  Cpl. Butkus activated his lights and sirens on his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria and began to respond to the incident location. 

 

The Trooper was traveling on Route 4 westbound and approached the on-ramp for Route 141 northbound.  As the officer entered this intersection, his cruiser collided with a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country mini van.  The van was operated by Michael Wilson, 67, of Wilmington.  Neither operator was injured. 

 

The parties involved were interviewed, as were several witnesses.  Mr. Wilson was subsequently charged with Failure to Yield the Right of Way to an Approaching Emergency Vehicle.
