DSP News Release: Monday, April 27, 2009- State Troopers Investigate Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-495
Location of Incident: I-495 southbound at Route 13
Date and Time of Occurrence: Monday, April 27, 2009, at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Resume: Delaware State Troopers responded to the area of I-495 southbound this morning for two separate crashes involving four vehicles.
A 2006 Mack tractor-trailer (operated by John Burton, 40, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was traveling southbound in the center lane. A 1993 Nissan Maxima (operated by Aisha Skinner, 32, of Wilmington, Delaware) was traveling in the right lane adjacent to the Mack truck. The Nissan changed lanes to the center lane and into the tractor trailer. The Nissan then spun out of control and into a concrete barrier.
Mr. Burton was not injured.
Ms. Skinner was treated and released at Christiana Hospital. She was cited with Unsafe Lane Change.
Seconds after this first crash occurred, traffic southbound began to come to an abrupt stop to avoid the vehicles ahead. A 2002 15-passenger bus (operated by Delmar Joyner, 75, of Wilmington) was traveling in the center lane and was stopping quickly when it was rear ended by a 2005 school bus (operated by Sergio Vargas Alvarado, 52, of Wilmington).
The 15-passenger bus was a shuttle bus for Bank of America. It was occupied by the driver and three passengers. All of these subjects were treated and released at Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The school bus was not transporting any students at the time of the crash and the driver was not injured. Mr. Alvarado was cited with Inattentive Driving.
