DSP News Release: Friday, September 4th, 2009

 

Location: Vandyke Greenspring Road approaching the area of Clayton Greenspring Road, Smyrna, DE 

 

Date of Occurrence: Friday, September 4th, 2009 at 8:41 pm

 

Resume:  Delaware State Police Troopers responded to the above stated location for a fatal crash involving a single motor vehicle and a pedestrian. 

 

The investigation revealed a 1988 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by a 17-year old male of Smyrna, was traveling eastbound on Vandyke Greenspring Road.  The operator of the Silverado  slowed and blew his horn as he approached a male walking in the center of the two-lane roadway facing away from the Silverado.   The pedestrian then dove across the path of the Silverado.  The operator of the Silverado was unable to brake in time and struck the pedestrian. 

 

The 46-year old male pedestrian was flown to Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash shortly after 11 pm.  Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

 

The operator of the Silverado was properly restrained and alcohol is not a factor. 

 

The investigation is on-going.  The names of the individuals involved in this crash are being withheld pending the notification of family.
