Motorcyclist Dies in Clayton Fatal Crash

Released Friday, May 08, 2009

Clayton – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 42 year old Chestertown, MD man.  Troopers responded to the two vehicle crash last evening at 8:48 pm in the area of the 1900 block of Millington Road (SR 6) west of Clayton after it was reported a motorcyclist struck a vehicle.

Investigators learned a 2007 Suzuki GSX150 motorcycle, operated by Vincent E. Harris, 42 of Chestertown, MD was traveling eastbound on Millington Road.  A 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe, operated by Maria A. Roman Esparza, 24 of Dover had pulled out of a private residence in the 1900 block of Millington Road to travel east.  Shortly after entering the roadway and traveling eastbound on Millington Road the motorcyclist struck the rear of the Santa Fe resulting in the crash.

Because of the crash, Mr. Harris was ejected from the motorcycle and died as a result of injuries sustained.  He was wearing a helmet.  Ms. Esparza was taken to Kent General Hospital because she was several months pregnant and admitted for observation.  She was wearing a seatbelt.

Preliminary investigation suggests speed was a factor on behalf of the motorcycle.  Alcohol was not involved.  The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours.  The crash remains under investigation and currently no charges have been filed.
